Columbia Trash Poland Three To Nil, Keep The Dream Alive

After an unexpected defeat against Japan on Match Day 1, Columbia were on the verge of losing their knockout stage spot until their win over Poland kept their hopes alive, thanks to James Rodriguez’s performance who bagged two assists in the game after being used as a sub in the first match due to fitness issues. After Columbia’s 2-1 loss against Japan and Poland’s 2-1 loss to Senegal, it was a must-win game for both the teams, but Poland were easily outclassed by the mighty Columbia. Goals from Yerry Mina, Falcao and Cuadrado helped Columbia to win three important points in the must-win match.

Columbian defenders were also successful in keeping the Polish attack in their pockets as they struggled to create or convert any chance. Unlike Poland, Columbian attack was successful in creating as well as converting the chances they got. Yerry Mina scored the first goal with a header to James’s cross in 40th minute of the first half. In the 70th minute, Radamel Falcao successfully converted Juan Quintero’s through ball. The prolific attacker got a breakthrough after missing out on the World Cup in 2014. Later, in the 76th minute, Cuadrado finished beautifully behind Szczesny to the beautiful ball played by James Rodriguez. This win kept the Columbian World Cup dreams alive but knocked Poland out of the competition.

Columbia now have one game against Senegal to win which will see them in the Knockout stage. The earlier match that saw Senegal drawing with Japan meant that no team in the group H has definite spot in the last 16 but Poland surely have missed their chance to shine in Russia. But James’ comeback and a dominating game against Poland clearly have risen the hopes of the Columbians. Columbia will definitely look to better their performance than the previous World Cup where they made it to the quarter-finals and lost to the hosts, Brazil.
